A group of local students began their culinary journey in the Healthy Cooking on a Budget and Café Skills course at Djerriwarrh Community & Education Services in July 2014. They sliced, baked and grilled to perfection under the guidance of trainer Vivian.

“My people skills and technical skills have improved. I’ve learned that communication is important when cooking in a team,” said Melissa.

On top of that, students served sumptuous food weekly to staff and patrons of Djerri’s Café as part of their course. They were trained to practice good customer service and cash handling skills while serving on the front line. Students also took home some great, simple recipes to help them prepare healthy meals on a budget at home.

“Cooking makes me happy. I learned different ways to cook. I help with dinner at home now,” shared Stephen, a student from the Melton Specialist School.

“The trainer is knowledgeable and the learning environment is nice and friendly,” added Anne.
