Young, motivated and inspiring, Ben began his learning journey at Djerriwarrh in the Certificate IV Disability course in October 2014. He is currently undertaking a weekly work placement component with Merrimu as part of his course.
“Studying at Djerriwarrh has been very rewarding, the learning environment encourages participation and sharing of ideas,” said Ben.
Ben is enthusiastic to share a day in his life as a disability support worker where he is tasked to set up classes in a sensory room. He interacts and assists people with their daily activities while putting the skills learnt in the classroom into practice.
“Seeing them smile and offer appreciation motivates me to finish my course. A simple hello, handshake or even a hug gives me a morale boost,” added Ben.
During his free time, Ben enjoys cooking and pursues his passion in music by playing drum kits. He aspires to move up the career ladder in the disability sector while continuing to give his best care to people with a disability need.
The Certificate IV in Disability course is delivered in partnership with Merrimu, with a unique opportunity for work placement in Merrimu working across a variety of programs. Merrimu has been supporting people with a disability in the community for 40 years.
“Our partnership with Djerriwarrh has enabled us to work with students and give them real life experience working with people with disability which is a great step towards a career pathway in the disability sector. Our aim is to employ the best students at the end of their placement,” shared Carolynne, General Manager Services of Merrimu.
