On Thursday 25 September, more than sixty guests gathered at the Melton Library & Learning Hub to celebrate the official launch of the Melton Suburban University Study Hub.
The event brought together government, higher education, and community leaders – alongside local students – to mark a new chapter for education in Melbourne’s west. Assistant Minister for Education the Hon. Julian Hill MP officially opened the Hub, joined by the Hon. Sam Rae MP, Steve McGhie MP, City of Melton Mayor Cr Steve Abboushi, Victoria University Vice-Chancellor Professor Adam Shoemaker, and many others.
As Djerriwarrh Deputy Chair Stuart Deagan reflected: “We’re not just opening a space, we’re opening doors to the future.”
More than a building
The Study Hub is a place where Melton students can find connection, support, and the practical resources that make higher education possible. But the launch reminded us that it represents more than just desks and Wi-Fi. It’s the outcome of years of community advocacy and the belief that where you live should never limit the opportunities you can access.
For Djerriwarrh Community & Education Services, the Hub is a continuation of our mission: to champion lifelong learning and break down barriers for the communities we serve. It’s proof of what can be achieved when local voices are heard and acted on.
A shared achievement
The Hub exists thanks to the Australian Government’s Suburban University Study Hubs Program, operated locally by Djerriwarrh in partnership with Melton City Council and Victoria University. Together, we’ve delivered a place that will benefit students across all Australian universities and TAFEs who call Melton home.
This partnership shows what’s possible when all levels of government, education providers, and community organisations work toward a shared vision – a vision where Melton is recognised not just as one of the fastest-growing regions in Victoria, but as a place where education, opportunity, and aspiration can thrive.
Looking ahead
The official launch may be behind us, but for the students of Melton, the journey is just beginning. With the Hub now open, we’re excited to welcome more local learners through the doors, to continue strengthening partnerships, and to keep advocating for the resources our region deserves.
The message from the day was clear: Melton students deserve the same opportunities, support, and sense of belonging as any student in Melbourne. The Melton Study Hub is a vital step in making that a reality.
