Study leads to a new career

Haseena has found a new career as a Home Care Worker, after Covid forced her to change her employment direction.

Haseena was born in India and has a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Geology, and Chemistry. She came to Australia as a skilled migrant with her husband and 3 children. She worked at Marvel Stadium as an Administration Team Leader for 10 years but was made redundant due to COVID pandemic. This was a great shock to her, but her family encouraged her to study and try something new.

Haseena had previously looked after her grandparents in India so she thought she might like to look after elderly people in her community in Australia.

She found Djerriwarrh’s Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) after searching on the internet and enrolled in our 6-month course. She was volunteering at Baptcare at the same time and with her studies and volunteering she has been able to find a job as a Home Care Worker.

Haseena told me that she see two clients per day in their homes and they are ‘beautiful people. They can’t see their loved ones so they share their stories with me, because of the trust we’ve developed.’ She helps her clients to shower and dress and does things like laundry and making beds. She helps them to stay in their homes by doing things for them that they can no longer do themselves.

Haseena enjoys the work so much that she is also continuing her studies with a further certificate in Aged Care. Haseena said that, ‘Maybe one day I’ll need help like this. I’m very glad I’m helping these people.’
