Inspired by his daughter and an ambition to give back to the community, Gary took on a career change after twenty-five years in the security industry. He enrolled into the Certificate III in Home and Community Care & Certificate in III Aged Care course with Djerriwarrh Community & Education Services in February 2014.

“My learning journey has been an eye-opener. The trainer was caring, sharing and guided all of us toward our goal,” said Gary.

“I live in the Melton area and it is an advantage to be able to learn locally too,” he added.

Gary’s dedication and confidence gained him casual employment while he was undertaking his placement at a local aged care facility.

“The placement filled the gaps and provided me experience working in an actual aged care environment,” added Gary.

Facility Manager of Willowbrae-Melton Residential Aged Care, Amanda Foxwell said that they have been providing this opportunity to the local community for the past 12 years and has employed a large number of local trainees through these programs.

“We recognise that the staff of Willowbrae-Melton is our greatest asset and by participating in such programs, we are able to observe ‘first hand’ the skills required to deliver such a high standard of care,” said Amanda.
